Matthias Spielkamp is co-founder and executive director of AlgorithmWatch, a human rights organization based in Berlin and Zurich. It was awarded the Brandenburg Freedom Prize in 2024 and the Theodor Heuss Medal in 2018 and was on the shortlist for the Grimme Online Nominee 2019. Matthias testified before committees of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the German Bundestag and other institutions on automation and AI and was a member of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) from 2020-2022. Matthias serves on the governing boards of the German section of Reporters Without Borders and Stiftung Warentest (similar to Consumer Reports in the US), the advisory boards of Freudenberg Stiftung and the Whistleblower Network and the Expert Committee on Communication/Information of Germany’s UNESCO Commission. He was a fellow of ZEIT Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator and the American Council on Germany. Matthias is editor of the Automating Society reports and has written and edited books on the automation of society, digital journalism and Internet governance. He holds master’s degrees in Journalism from the University of Colorado in Boulder and in Philosophy from the Free University of Berlin.
Matthias ist Mitgründer und Geschäftsführer von AlgorithmWatch (Brandenburger Freiheitspreis 2023, Theodor-Heuss-Medaille 2017, nominiert für den Grimme Online Award 2019). Er ist Mitglied im Vorstand bei Reporter ohne Grenzen, im Verwaltungsrat der Stiftung Warentest und dem Kuratorium der Freudenberg-Stiftung, im Beirat des Whistleblower-Netzwerks und im Fachausschuss Kommunikation/Information der Deutschen UNESCO-Kommission. Von 2020 bis 2022 war er Mitglied der Initiative Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). Matthias war Sachverständiger in Anhörungen des Europarats, des EU-Parlaments und des Bundestags. Er ist Herausgeber der Automating Society Reports und Autor von Büchern zu Algorithmen, KI und Automatisierung, zur Zukunft des Journalismus und des Urheberrechts sowie zur Internet Governance. Seine journalistischen Beiträge sind in MIT Technology Review, Die Zeit oder auch brand eins erschienen.
